Summoning Her Song

Summoning Her Song

Summoning Her Song

There is a quiet power in childhood that we often forget as adults. My new painting, Summoning Her Song, part of my series Held in the Light, explores that power, moments where a child’s presence expands beyond her body, commanding attention, imagination, and awe.

The Inspiration

I first noticed the little girl on the beaches of Corpus Christi, Texas. From the deck of the aircraft carrier museum, I saw her absorbed in the sand, waving a stick as if directing some unseen rhythm. She was completely alone, and I could not tell her age, but the energy around her made me stop. I quickly snapped a photo. Later, when I showed it to my partner, he agreed there was something magical about her. The image stayed with me for two years before I finally painted her.

The Process

Translating that image to canvas was a delicate balance. The sand had to feel alive but not distract from her silhouette and shadow, which carry the energy of the piece. Her scale and placement were constantly adjusted. Her power shifts depending on how big she is on the canvas and where she stands. Each adjustment was a puzzle and a learning process, teaching me to listen to the painting rather than control it.

Poetry as a Layer

The poem that accompanies Summoning Her Song emerged alongside the painting. It is both a way to share my vision and another layer of the artwork. So much of what I do is about a deeper meaning or struggle behind what appears simple or light, and this piece is no exception.

The Series: Held in the Light

Held in the Light is a series exploring the mystery and strength within childhood. Each painting centers on a young girl, often solitary, yet commanding, reminding us of the creativity, curiosity, and inner power we have always carried. In Summoning Her Song, the girl gestures over the sand as if conducting an unseen symphony. The work connects to the themes of imagination, strength, and presence that run throughout the series.

A Healing Practice

My art practice is also a spiritual and healing process. I have heard from viewers that experiencing my work brings them a sense of peace or reflection on their own journey. I hope Summoning Her Song allows each viewer to find what resonates most, whether it is the power, the imagination, or simply the wonder of a moment frozen in time.

The original painting is now available. Limited-edition prints will be released soon.
